Last Wednesday, two Reut Analysts joined former minister and head of the ‘Home Front Preparedness Committee’, Ami Ayalon, on his visit to the south of Israel.
During the visit, we met with the Barzilai Medical Center Board of Directors in Ashkelon, as well as with the mayor and Community Resilience center in Sderot. The meeting with David Buskilah, Sderot’s newly elected mayor, mainly focused on the issues of leadership and conduct. In this context, he mentioned that there is no mass departure of Sderot’s inhabitants, and that families seeking evacuation as well as activities of the Non Government sector are all coordinated with the city hall. The municipality has also been ‘nationalizing’ so called ‘private shelters’ in order to prepare and utilize them for the future crises.
The role of Sderot’s municipality and the visibility of its actions have undergone a dramatic change. Instead of focusing on the impression of wretchedness, the city now focuses on its ‘Victory Narrative’. Due to this positive branding, Sderot will be able to turn into model of national emergency preparedness
