Last week several anti-Israel events held in different parts of the world marked the fifth annual “Israel Apartheid Week” which gained wide public interest and played host to leading academics, artists, authors and politicians.
“Israel Apartheid Week” is just one part of several political and diplomatic “assaults” on Israel following the recent Operation Cast Lead.
The Reut Institute contends that some elements which equate Israel to Apartheid are striving to intensify the state’s de-legitimization so as to encourage economic and academic boycotts. Their final goal is to accelerate an international inversion towards the principle of the ‘Two State Solution’ and instead promote the ‘One State Solution’ narrative on the basis of the South-African formula of ‘one man one vote’.
Thus alongside the existing existential military-security threat Israel faces, a political-diplomatic threat of existential significance is concurrently developing. The challenges facing Israel require an overhaul of the country’s foreign policy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Without such overhaul, the MFA’s ability to represent foreign policy considerations in national security discussions will continue to be restricted, and the State of Israel will have difficulty dealing with the challenges it currently faces.
