Globes recently reported that following a meeting between Israeli and Palestinian representatives, the Palestinians demanded an independent postal service. Israel should consider taking advantage of this suggestion as part of upgrading the status of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and anchoring the principle of separation between the two peoples.
One of the main challenges to Israel’s national security is the fact that the principle of separation between Israel and the Palestinians is weakening. While in the past, the establishment of a Palestinian state was considered an immediate Palestinian interest, today this aspiration is eroding. Many ‘moderate’ Palestinians are inverting their position towards the establishment of a Palestinian state and are promoting the One State Solution instead.
Therefore, it is in Israel’s best interest to strengthen the PA and anchor the principle of separation as much as possible.
This can be done by upgrading the sovereign status of the Palestinian Authority and rescinding many of the restrictions on its sovereign powers that were stipulated in Interim Agreement.
The establishment of an independent postal service is just one example of such an ‘upgrade’ towards the PA becoming an independent state.
