In an article entitled “Israel’s growing isolation: Our global status is gradually being eroded as international pressure grows,” Ron Ben-Yishai describes the anti-Israel tide rising in Europe and South America and its relation to latent anti-Semitism.
Ben-Yishai draws a worst-case scenario in which “an accumulation of positions, declarations, and actions adopted by organizations and governments worldwide with growing intensity” is “trying to brand Israel as a ‘pariah state’, undermine the legitimacy of its very existence, and revoke its natural right and duty to defend its citizens – similarly to the manner in which the international community “took care” of the apartheid regime in South Africa.”
This Ben-Yishai piece (as well as an important article by Ari Shavit) demonstrate a growing recognition that Israel faces a threat to its very legitimacy; beyond criticism of Israel’s policy, an assault on Israel’s right to exist.
