An interesting blog post by professor and author Gil Troy focuses on one of the issues that became a major topic of discussion at the United Jewish Communities General Assembly this month – a growing movement aimed at Israel’s delegitimization. A central contributing strategy is the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement
Confronting the threat posed by forces seeking Israel’s delegitimization is, according to Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations Malcolm Hoenlein, “the defining issue of our time.”
Troy writes that so far, the warfare has been asymmetrical – facing the systematic BDS campaign, Jewish groups have responded sporadically and haphazardly. However there is a growing awareness that the Jewish community needs a sophisticated, coordinated strategy.
Troy argues that we need a sustained, effective, movement against this delegitimacy. Among other things, he suggests that relationships must be nurtured and grassroots tended to establish common cause against the forces of hatred. Moreover, the Jewish community should be proactive not reactive, and able to master the insider lingo of each special interest group involved in a particular fight.
