In analyzing the encroaching threat posed by efforts to delegitimize Israel globally, Reut’s political-security team is examining dynamics connected to what we are loosely referring to as an “unholy alliance.”
This unholy alliance comprises elements of the extreme political Left which work in various levels of coordination with Islamist organizations. The concern is that their combined political agenda will cloak attempts to negate the right of Israel to exist in the language of the human rights community.
An example of this dynamic in action is provided by a Hamas committee set up in order to aid European lawyers in investigating alleged Israel war crimes with the purpose of prosecuting Israeli military and political leaders. According to the committee head Diya al-Din Madhoun, the committee also encourages activists to file charges against Israel in European countries, including Britain, Spain, Belgium and Norway. As al-Din Madhoun states, ‘lawfare’ has “absolutely become our policy.”
Most recently, this Hamas committee facilitated efforts led by a group of independent UK-based lawyers to have an arrest warrant issued against Israel’s former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
