The London School of Economics (LSE) students union voted in November in favor of twinning with the Islamic university of Gaza. This recent decision provides more evidence of the increasing radicalization of the liberal mainstream in Britain, and the growing trend within its ranks of supporting elements that are directly affiliated with Hamas.
The Islamic university of Gaza is strongly affiliated with Hamas. Most of the movement’s political and spiritual leadership has risen from the ranks of the university. It was recently claimed that Hamas has used the university’s laboratories for the research and development of Qassam missiles that were later used against Israeli citizens.
Cooperation between European entities and Hamas or its affiliates has strengthened significantly since Israel’s Operation Cast Lead. This trend obligates Israel to reassess the challenge it faces in the international arena. The LSE decision also reflects a growing tendency among pro-Palestinian elements to perceive the Palestinian narrative within a homogeneous ideological frame, without giving any thought to the extremist characteristics of some of the more notorious supporters of that narrative.
