A recently published book review by Dov Tamari (The first Chief Intelligence Officer of the Israeli Corps) analyzes Dan Halutz’s new book from a strategic point of view.
In the context of the Second Lebanon War and Halutz’s ensuing resignation, Tamari examines whether Halutz indeed took full responsibility for his actions as the IDF’s Chief of Staff during the war or was it merely a partial admission.
In his review, Tamari mainly focuses on what are the Chief of Staff’s responsibilities vis-à-vis the political branch, on the one hand, and the army on the other.
Tamari’s review is reminiscent of Thomas S. Kuhn’s theory in his book “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions” (adopted by Reut as part of it’s canon of books). Tamari emphasizes the Chief of Staff’s responsibility to administer paradigm shifts, when necessary. This duty requires both sensoring changes in reality, changing the perspective of soldiers, and creating a conceptual framework for decision makers.
