Last Thursday, we held a teleconference with some of Reut’s overseas community. These teleconferences are presented by Reut President Gidi Grinstein and feature the team’s latest analysis on the most relevant policy challenges facing Israel. This call focussed on the obstacles and opportunities of the renewed Israeli-Palestinian political process.

Several former peace negotiators recently published a letter in the London Times arguing that the Quartet’s 3 Demands set an unworkable threshold for commencing negotiations, and calling for a rethink in the strategy for achieving peace in the Middle East (‘grounded in realism, not ideology’) which would move Hamas into the political process.

Following Hamas’ takeover of Gaza in June 2007, a political split has been created between a Hamastan in Gaza and a West Bank Fatah-land. This division may reach a point of no return, when in January 09′ all three branches of the Palestinian political system may be officially split.
